A Stone Retreat in the Apokoronas Countryside

In a peaceful and secluded setting near the traditional village of Gavalochori, Apokoronas, this distinctive stone property was created as a true summer retreat: a place of tranquillity, creativity and connection with the Cretan landscape.

The estate extends across two neighbouring plots with a combined area of approximately 7,500 sq.m. It includes a main two-storey residence, an independent guest house with a mezzanine, and ancillary spaces. The property enjoys open views towards the White Mountains, with the sea visible in the distance.

The natural surroundings are an essential part of the property’s character. Around 30 olive trees, carob trees and other native Cretan species create a mature Mediterranean setting, offering privacy and a genuine sense of place.

The architecture preserves the authentic character of Cretan stone construction. Part of the building is believed to have older historical origins, possibly dating back to the Venetian era, lending the property a distinctive sense of continuity and identity.

Its restoration and extension were carried out with great respect for the original structure, giving it new life without compromising its soul. Skilled local craftsmen, specialising in stone and woodwork, worked with care to preserve traditional materials and the character of local architecture.

The previous owners, with a deep love for art and Crete, chose the house as a place for summer living and inspiration, away from the pace of Paris. The estate has hosted moments of creativity, painting and gatherings of friends and artists — an atmosphere that can still be felt today.

This is a rare property offering privacy, character and substance — ideal as a family residence, a creative retreat, or a thoughtful hospitality investment in the authentic countryside of Apokoronas.
